I LOVE LOVE LOVE acai bowls. I don’t know who I can credit for the idea of this, but I would love to give them a big old hug and say thanks.

Acai bowls have taken the Hawaiian islands and many other places like a storm and I am guilty of jumping on the bandwagon of absolutely loving this delicious treat. On the go meal packed with vitamins and minerals and customizable to everyone’s liking. I’d say that’s the ultimate win.

What is acai?

Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) are deep purple berries that come from the acai palm native to South America.

Where can I find acai?

Fresh acai is hard to come by in the states, but there are many frozen blends that can be found at your local supermarkets or big box stores. I like to use Sambazon frozen acai blend superfruit packs.

What is an acai bowl?

An acai bowl is a thicker acai smoothie enjoyed out of a bowl topped with your favorite goodies (often fruits, nuts, seeds, etc).

Are acai bowls healthy?

Acai smoothie bowls are loaded with antioxidants which help the immune system’s defense system, healthy omegas that help the brain and heart, and acai alone is low in natural sugar. Many of these smoothie bowls have lots of other added fruits which increase the total sugars. Luckily with homemade acai bowls you can control how much sugar is being added.

To make my favorite homemade acai bowl blend you will need:

  • Frozen acai puree
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Frozen bananas
  • Apple juice

That makes the base for these homemade acai bowls

  • Vegan
  • Gluten free
  • Dairy free

What types of things can be used as toppings on these smoothie bowls?

I like to use strawberries, bananas, granola, honey, almonds, coconut shavings, chia seeds, cacao nibs.

And one of my favorites drizzled over the top: liliko’i butter.

If you are ever on Maui you have to check out my favorite acai bowls at Mo ‘Ono Hawai’i and Humbowl Wagon.

How to store homemade acai bowls?

These are best eaten immediately, however you can pre mix the acai base and freeze in portions. Once ready for use place frozen mixture in the blender and blend until smooth.

How to make a homemade acai bowl?

To a blender add acai blend, blueberries, strawberries, banana, and apple juice. Blend until smooth and well combined.

Pour in to a bowl and add the toppings of your choice. Serve immediately.

    • Aloha Eileen. I’ve never tried it. I suppose you could try. It would change the taste of the bowl for sure, but it could be yummy. If you try it let me know. Thanks.
