Instant Pot boiled peanuts make the perfect salty snack. What would normally take hours can be made in half the time in the comfort of your own home.
If you’ve ever been to a Hawaiian party you’re bound to find some yummy boiled peanuts on the pupu table. Right next to the shoyu ahi poke and edamame I mean it’s the perfect salty snack that’s handheld and hits all the right spots.
Making traditional boiled peanuts takes hours on the stove and constant monitoring to make sure the water and salt levels are right. But not to fear, thanks to modern technology there’s an easier and quicker way to do it.
Call in the Instant Pot. If you don’t have one of these you’ve got to get yourself one. It’s an electric pressure cooker and cuts down the cooking time on so many of your favorite foods, including boiled peanuts.
What are boiled peanuts?
As the name suggests, boiled peanuts are raw or green peanuts that have been salted and boiled to give it a soft texture. There are many different ways that you can flavor Instant Pot boiled peanuts, but my personal favorite is Hawaiian salt.
Ingredients for Instant Pot boiled peanuts
- Raw peanuts
- Hawaiian salt
- Water
*This is a great base recipe. You can other flavors and spices as you wish. Some common options are star anise, Chinese five spice, garlic, brown sugar, chili pepper flakes.
Raw peanuts vs green peanuts?
- Raw peanuts are air dried and stored in a cool place. The moisture in raw peanuts is about 10%.
- Green peanuts are freshly dug out of the ground and no moisture has been removed.
Which peanuts are used for Instant Pot boiled peanuts?
You can use either raw or green peanuts. Raw peanuts take a little longer to cook down as the moisture has been removed.
What do Instant Pot boiled peanuts taste like?
Peanuts are a legume crop. Other legumes include soybeans, peas, lentils, beans, etc. Boiling the peanuts in a salty brine infuses a great salty flavor to the peanut. It’s texture is similar to that of a cooked soybean and has a salty, nutty flavor.
Can you eat peanut shells?
Although the shells of peanuts can be eaten, it’s not recommended. The shells can cause gastrointestinal distress and even blockages.
Are boiled peanuts healthy?
Peanuts are a good source of protein and fats, as well as low in carbohydrates. Boiled peanuts are higher in antioxidants than raw or roasted peanuts.
How long does it take to make Instant Pot boiled peanuts?
Traditional boiled peanuts are made on the stove top and takes about 3 ½ to 4hrs. Making this in the Instant Pot cuts the cook time down to less than 2 hours.
What type of glass can go in the Instant Pot?
Any Pyrex, glass, or ceramic that is safe to use in the oven can be used in the Instant Pot.
How to store Instant Pot boiled peanuts?
Once cooled the peanuts should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Can you freeze boiled peanuts?
Yes. It will keep for up to 6 months in an airtight container.

- Rinse peanuts under running water to remove impurities.
- Pour peanuts, salt, and water in the inner pot of the Instant Pot.

My Grandmother was the Sears Peanut Lady (if you’re young, you’ll have to ask your parents who she was). Anyway, she sold boiled peanuts in front of the original Sears in McCully and I never got the recipe from my father.
Thank goodness for the pressure cooker, because I would never have tried to make this on my own. did make mine Chinese – style, with star anise and ginger using your cooking methods and time. It was a hit and everyone loved it!

I like my boiled peanuts a little on the firmer texture. By cooking it for 60 minutes is the texture more of a softer texture?
Aloha Wanda. A little on the firmer side. I would say take it out 10min before and see if you like it. If it needs to go more you can cook it longer until you find the exact consistency you like.
