Furikake animal crackers is an East meets West twist on a Hawai’i favorite Chex Mix recipe. A simple yet delicious treat that is perfect for on the go snacking.

Your favorite childhood cracker fancied up with a sweet and salty glaze with a hint of furikake. I mean furikake goes well with so many things right? So, why not animal crackers.

I mean who doesn’t like animal crackers? Perfect for kids and kids at heart.

Comfort foods are ever so popular now. With all that is going on in the world, it’s nice to sit down and enjoy a yummy treat with those you love.

What is furikake?

Furikake is a popular Japanese condiment made of dried seaweed, sugar, salt, and sesame seeds. It tastes great on salmon, shrimp, popcorn, rice, and many other things.

Do I have to use corn syrup in this recipe?

No. Corn syrup can be replaced by another syrup sweetener of your choice. You can also make your own homemade corn syrup substitute.

How to store furikake animal crackers?

Once completely cooled place crackers in a zip top bag or an airtight container and keep at room temperature. This will keep for a couple of weeks.

How to make furikake animal crackers?

Preheat oven to 250F.

In a medium size pot or saucepan over medium heat add butter and begin to melt. Be sure to stir to prevent burning. Once most of the butter has melted add sugar and salt. Stir until sugar and salt have dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in corn syrup and oil. Whisk until well combined.

Next evenly spread animal crackers over a rimmed baking sheet. Pour butter mixture over the crackers and stir to evenly coat.

Sprinkle furikake over both trays and stir to coat.

Bake for 1 hour stirring every 15 minutes. Be sure to rotate the pans halfway through baking.

Once done remove from the oven and give it a quick stir before it completely sets. This will help the animal cracker from sticking to the baking sheet. ENJOY!

    These are so yummy! Dangerously addicting. They’re easy to make. I didn’t have corn syrup so I used agave and came out great. Mahalo for sharing the recipe!
